Outsourcing Agency to the Future
Circumstances rarely change unless we change them.
One evening I was having dinner with a friend. We were talking about life, plans, the commitments I was making toward the future. After I shared something I was weighing, he looked right at me and said, "I hope all of these future commitments pay off the way you're planning."
His tone caught me. It was supportive, but curious. Almost a question. I thought about it all of Saturday. By Sunday morning I understood what he had seen that I had not. I had been outsourcing my agency to the future.
Outsourcing agency happens when we delay ownership today because we believe circumstances will be better later. We tell ourselves that in the future we will have more leverage, more clarity, more confidence, more authority, and then we will speak up, hold the line, or make the hard call. We tell ourselves it is not important yet.
It shows up everywhere once you see it. We put off the difficult conversation because maybe things will resolve on their own. We accept an expectation we know is unrealistic because it is early and we do not want the friction. We avoid setting the boundary because once the next thing lands, it will not matter anyway.
We justify the delay, and not because we are weak. We convince ourselves the future will handle what we are unwilling to face now.
The truth is quieter and harder than that. Circumstances rarely change unless we change them. The leverage you are waiting for is usually built by the thing you are avoiding. The future self who finally speaks up is not created by time passing. He is created the first time you choose to act as him today.
